The Sphinx, guardian of the Giza plateau, is thought to hide under its enigmatic face the secret of a pyramid of archives where the extraordinary knowledge of an ancient and prestigious civilization is preserved.
Zep Tepi or the "First Time" is spoken of many times in ancient Egyptian religious texts. Egyptologists R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz (1887--1961) speculated that ancient Egypt owed its core knowledge to an earlier lost civilization, or lost stage of its own civilization, that dated back to prehistoric times. He suggested that the weathering of the Sphinx was caused by water, not wind and sand.
If true, this meant that the monument may be a surviving structure from that earlier culture. During the transition from the last ice age to the present desert environment, Egypt experienced rainfall heavier than any that has fallen in historic times. These rains fell in intervals between 10,000 and 3000 BCE and then tapered off to their current level of about 20 cm per year by about 2200 BCE.
Independent Egyptologists and writer John West invited Boston University geologist Dr. Robert Schoch to examine the Sphinx for evidence of water weathering. The two visited the monument in 1990 and again in 1991. On the second visit, Dr. Thomas Dobecki, a geophysicist, helped Schoch conduct soundings to determine whether the rock underneath the Sphinx enclosure had weathered. At their presentation at the Geological Society of America's convention in 1991, attending geologists unanimously agreed, on the basis of the extensive photographic evidence presented, that the Sphinx was indeed water weathered.
Schoch also believes that the head, which was too small in proportion to the body, had probably been recarved in historic times from an earlier lion's head. The Sphinx is the forerunner of the architectural complex of Giza. Schoch estimated the date of the Sphinx and most of the enclosure to between 5000 and 7000 BCE, far earlier than the date of 2500 assumed by archaeology. Schoch noted that weathering could have been non-linear, slowing as it got deeper because of the increasing mass of rock overhead. On this assumption, the Sphinx could have been significantly older than 7000 BCE.
Pharaoh Amenhotep II (1448-1420 B.C.) mentioned that the Sphinx was older than the Pyramids and generally considered to have been buried in sand until Thutmosis IV (18th Dynasty, 1420-1411 B.C.) had a dream of a god telling him to clear the sand away. The stela he put up between the paws was discovered when the Sphinx was cleared of sand in our time. A partially-eroded hieroglyphic phrase -- translated as "praise to Un-nefer [Khafre] the statue made for Atum-Harmakhis" -- was found near the bottom of the stela. Egyptologists point to this as evidence that Khafre built the Sphinx. Others disagree. Some time after it was excavated, the inscription flaked off. Now only drawings remain.
Found in an early 20th-century newspaper:
"When restorers reached the halfway point on the sphinx's left side last summer, they became intrigued by a patch of rocks. The team consulted thousands of old photographs of the statue, looking for answers. They found them in a photograph taken during a 1926 restoration effort begun after the Sphinx was dug out of a sandy grave. The photo showed a man standing at the entrance of a passage. The passage was sealed by new blocks, and restorers never recorded what, if anything, had been found".
Seismographic tests certainly show what appears to be a large void (chamber?) beneath the left paw of the Sphinx. The director of the Giza Pyramids Excavation Zahi Hawass does not trust the technology. Since the Sphinx is, arguably, politically the most sensitive archaeological site on the planet, he does not want to drill there unless he is absolutely convinced of the chamber's existence. However, he says that if he can be convinced the readings are reliable, (via further seismographic studies and drilling in less sensitive areas around the plateau) he will consider drilling down in front of the Sphinx.
This is an aerial picture of the Memphite Necropolis Site at Giza, south-west of Cairo. Look carefully at the way the Pyramids are aligned. At first glance they seem to be imperfectly positioned. Classical Egyptologists maintain that this was either a mistake or a result of the terrain in the Giza Plateau. Compare this to the image of the Belt Stars of Orion and things become a little clearer. Far from being a mistake, the Pyramids are aligned almost exactly as the Belt Stars appear
The Great Pyramid
The universality of the layout of the site matches certain constructions in Central America and in Tibet.
The Great Pyramid is a scale model of the Earth at a ratio of 1 : 43,200.
The Great Pyramid's height is in relationship to its base sides as a circles' radius is to its circumference ( 1/2 Pi ).
The golden section -- 1.618 -- the five-pointed star and the seal of Solomon can be found everywhere at the Giza site.
The Great Pyramid is the most perfectly aligned structure in the world. Its alignment is superior to that produced by laser technology.
The enormous granite and limestone blocks are so precisely placed that the joints are less than one fiftieth of an inch in thickness. The joints are held by a type of "cement" the composition of which we have been unable to determine.
Some of the stone work performed in the construction of The Great Pyramid requires high speed diamond tipped drills that operate at an efficiency of approximately 500 times the efficiency and power of our contemporary tools.
There are no records regarding the construction of The Great Pyramid nor does The Great Pyramid contain any hieroglyphics.
To the eleven pyramids of the plateau must be added a twelfth, buried 1 56 cubits north of the Sphinx, the pyramid of the archives, where the memory of an unknown civilization is to be found.
The "language" of The Great Pyramid is mathematics and symbol. The most obvious mathematical expression is Pi and most of its geometric expressions are centered around the astronomy of the Sun's apparent movement around the Earth.
The Great Pyramid is a monument to light, its symbols, when decoded, provide the key to unlocking the secrets of all of the world's great religions.
